It’s been a month of exceeding compliments and scathing insults for me. And that was just with my girlfriend here! (hiyooo! Don’t hit me honey!)
The reaction that The Unusual Suspects has gotten has been overwhelming. Here are some of the good thing said:
NY THEATRE
“a clever romp”
“several of the musical numbers… really let the excellent voices of the cast and the smart writing shine”
BACKSTAGE
“unapologetic silliness”
one of only two Backstage Off-Off Broadway picks
OFF OFF ONLINE
“the show is a lot of fun”
GAY CITY NEWS
“this non sequitur-laden musical murder mystery is off-the-wall but frequently side-splitting, with wonderfully comedic performances… and a slew of memorable lines”
DAVID NOH (GAY CITY NEWS) to our producer:
“As we left, my friend and I both agreed-what a shame that was the final, as I could easily have enjoyed seeing it all over again, and wish more people had seen it. It’s a crying shame that you guys didn’t win any judges’ awards–if only for the incredible ensemble acting. That same night I saw A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM in Central Park and found myself wishing it was your cast instead of the Public’s that was performing the show and, during the show’s many dull moments, found myself recasting it mentally with your various actors… I am lost in admiration, too, for the writer/composer.”
Not to mention the words about the fight:
“one of the best, funniest staged fights I’ve ever seen”
“A standout moments of the play is the hilarious (and I mean HILLARIOUS) duel between Glen Blandburr and Queen Hopsabucket, which is not only fun to watch but includes some very skillful choreography and stage combat.”
“[contains] one of the most awesome fights in Fringe Festival history”
But this isn’t all about ego-stroking. It’s nice to hear, especially with a show that I feel has little commercial value in today’s theatrical society. It means there’s something there. If nothing else, maybe I can get some work as a comedic fight choreographer. But this show isn’t dead yet. It’s just hibernating for a while so I can, in turn, take a nap.
Also, the website has been relaunched, and tomorrow we start Flash Dash properly (I hope people weren’t turned off that it wasn’t working right the first time – Jay has put in a billion hours for me on my site, and it looks great!) The new site will hopefully be updated far more often than my old one.
I’m dating an amazing girl who makes me daily reconsider my plans for life, and in the interim, I’m making plans for life, including possibly getting paid to write music for a musical, and doing a few random appearances for friends. Things are pretty exciting now. [foreshadowing!]
