Long Walk off a Short Cliff
Date: Summer 1997
Location: The Catskills, NY

Description: For anyone who doesn’t know me, I suffer from pretty acute acrophobia.  I get vertigo and often need to back away from the edges of cliffs.  However, I’m also someone who hates being limited by fear.  It’s why I worked in lighting (hanging 25+’ over head, or walking on 50′ slotted catwalks).  I’ve found that if I’m in control, I’m fine.  If I’m leaning on a railing that could give way, I can’t deal.  So when my friends went cliff jumping, it was a conquest I knew I’d have to just do.  If I remember correctly, I was the first one off, though it did take some pumping up before doing it.  I still never amazes me how short this cliff looks in this picture, and how many thousands of feet tall it looked when I was standing utop of it.

In the Arch
Date: June, 1996
Location: Wyckoff, NJ

Description: My prom stories were always pretty interesting.  I went to three proms.  The first, pictured here, was with Susan.  She was dating someone else at the time who couldn’t make it.  So I asked Susan, who was very bummed.  We had a great time.  The next year, after we’d already graduated, I got invited to senior prom by a friend (most of my close friends were in their grade.)  At that time, I WAS dating Susan, but went with Kristen.  It was awkward as I was invited by her to get back at her then-boyfriend (now husband).  I had a good time with my friends and got to meet up with Susan down the shore.  The third, and weirdest, prom was that of my first ever online friend.  She and I got along very well, though the same couldn’t be said for me and her friends, where I remember lots of protracted silence.  At least I got to double-use the tux rental.  Anyway, there’s a picture here that’s tangentially related to this.

Fire Extinguisher
Date: ???
Location: ???

Description: This was taken in a fast food joint somewhere along one of my travels.  I want to say it was on my Chicago trip in 2001, but I really don’t know for sure.  To see a sign indicating that there’s a fire extinguisher nearby is nothing new.  Seeing a sign telling you that there’s a SIGN of a fire extinguisher was very new, and in no ways comforting.  Maybe you’re supposed to smother the fire with the sign?  I never was sure.

In the Face!
Date: ~1997
Location: Oakland, NJ

Description: This picture has taken my best detective work to piece it all together.  First, the location was easy – Aaron’s folks’ basement was home to more shenanigans than anywhere else in my life.  Unfortunately, many of them were caught on video.  Second, it’s an interesting mesh of people, but it was pretty easy to determine what we were doing by the Balderdash paraphernalia scattered about (we still used the actual Balderdash paper back then!)  The timeline was the hardest, and I was only able to get close by the Dew.  The first time they changed from their classic logo to this more ‘hip’ one was my senior year of high school, and the incarnation in the photo only lasted a year or two if my memory serves me correct.  So, let’s say this was either 1997 or 1998.  This was right around the time that Balderdash turned into ‘Dash, and the game was never the same again.  Neither was Doug’s face, as evidenced by this shot that I was extremely fortunate to get with a disposable camera.  I don’t need to be a sleuth to know how much this picture makes me smile.

It Wasn’t Even Ramsey Day
Date: ~1989?
Location: Ramsey, NJ

Description: I have a few pictures that I have vague memories of, this being one of them, that I really wish I had clearer memories of.  For instance, why are the wheels on that plane turned outward – is is parked on a hill?  Second, why is there a plane sitting out with nobody around, thus allowing people to take pictures?  Third, and this one is most important, why is the plane inside a bowling alley?  I don’t remember how I bowled that day, but I have to imagine it was better than the Mets, whose jersey I wore proudly.

Smiles for Everyone
Date: January 1, 2001 (?)
Location: Wyckoff, NJ

Description:  Why the big smiles?  Well, largely because this was taken at a New Years party, and likely there was some libation involved.  I seem to remember this party being bittersweet – fun with friends, bad with the girlfriend (at the time.)  That theme has come back quite often in my life.  However, the smiles today are for my sister, who has given birth to a healthy baby boy on New Year’s Eve.  Go Foo-Bear!

5 Second Pose
Date: November, 2004
Location: Ridgewood, NJ

Description: In honor of Bryan Fenkart’s birthday, I will post a picture that doesn’t involve him at all, at least not directly.  He single-handedly got me back into wrestling during the Attitude Era of the late 90′s.  As such, I’ve met a number of wrestlers in my day and begrudgingly gotten autographs (I have never understood the importance of someone’s signature) – one of the best memories was having Edge sign my book “Sodas Rule” and comment that he hadn’t ever heard anyone ask him to do it.  I also got him to pose in a silly manner for our picture.  It started me on a quest to find celebrities and convince them to take ridiculous photos.  So far my tally is up to one.

The Worst Dressed Puerto Ricans Ever
Date: Winter, 1998
Location: New Brunswick, NJ

Description: The first two years of college were the height of my “I’ll dress any way I want and I don’t care” phase.  I was comfortable in the clothes and, feeling like an outcast anyway amongst the actors, it didn’t bother me getting strange looks everywhere.  However, my roommate at the time Ricky couldn’t believe that I’d wear those clothes in public.  He wore much more traditional flannel shirts and ‘zippy’ pants.  So we made a bet to wear each other’s clothes for one day.  We both felt incredibly awkward the entire day, but I think he more so than me.  Either way, this was the trial run, when he and fellow Puerto Rican raided my closet for a fashion show.  This would not be the last time friends of mine would do this with my closet.

Colorsplosion
Date: Fall 2001 (?)
Location: Harriman State Park, NY

Description: As the DPOD has stated in the past, Harriman State Park was a common hiking destination for me and my friends, specifically Perpendicular Point.  What made it spectular was the view, particularly in the middle of autumn, and that fact that it wasn’t a difficult hike.  You know the trees are giving you a full show when you don’t even immediately notice that Corey’s hair is bright blue.  This was one of the last trips I took there, due in part to spending my travelling time playing disc golf instead, often seeing rival scenery.
